Introduction
History tells us that many times founders and innovators lack the vision they need to achieve total greatness. Nowhere is this more evident than in the early days of the great Coca-Cola company.
In 1885, John Pemberton, an Atlanta pharmacist, produced a tonic, French Wine Cola, rather similar to Coca-Cola. Pemberton carried a jug of it down the street to Jacobs’ Pharmacy where, on Saturday, May 8, 1886, it was sold for the first time, for five cents a glass.
Pemberton, however, had limited success, selling only 25 gallons of syrup in his first year. Pemberton spent more money on advertising than he actually earned.
Just before his death in 1888, Pemberton sold his remaining interest in Coca-Cola to Asa G. Candler, the only one who understood the drink and its fabulous potential, for a mere $1,200.
On January 29, 1892, along with his brother and a couple of friends, Candler founded the original Coca-Cola Company. By 1916, Candler was 65 years old, and when he retired as president of the company. By focusing exclusively on soda fountain sales, he had become one of the country’s great commercial success stories. But even Candler didn’t have the vision for what would turn Coca-Cola into a worldwide giant in the bottling business.
Two young, enterprising attorneys, however, did have the ability to look to the future. Benjamin Thomas and Joseph Whitehead went to Candler with their idea to bottle Coca-Cola nationwide.
The result surpassed their wildest dreams - Candler sold them the rights to bottle Coca-Cola in almost the entire U. S. for the meager sum of one dollar (that he never cashed).
Candler, a member of an older generation who simply did not have the vision for the progress of the new century, never grasped the importance of the operation that would make Coca-Cola famous.
Hegemon Group International’s Leadership Format System is to marketing what the bottling business was to Cola-Cola.
Don’t make the same mistake Asa Candler did. Take Napoleon Hill’s advice: “If you want to be a millionaire, find one and do exactly as he does.”
